It all starts with the forbidden glance and this in turn leads to becoming the stepping stones of adultery and fornication. Take heed from these following quotes on the importance of lowering one’s gaze.

A poet of ancient times has said:

“All affairs begin with the sight,
the raging fire a spark can ignite”

While a contemporary poet declares:

“A look, then a smile,
then a nod of the head,
then a talk, then a promise,
then the warmth of the bed”

Another noteworthy quote:

“A look, then a smile, then a greeting,
then speaking, then an appointment, then a meeting”

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried their luck. The king looked at all the representations, but there were only two that fascinated him. Ultimately, he had to choose between them.

The first depiction was of a calm and quiet lake. The lake was a perfect mirror of placid, pacific mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. It seemed a perfect picture of peace.

The other image had mountains too, but these were rugged and bare. Above was an enraged sky, from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a furious, foaming waterfall. Apparently, this was not at all, the required piece of art. But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush, growing in a crack in the rock. In that bush a mother bird had built her peewee nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace!

Any idea, which one turned out to be the award-winning illustration? The king chose the second one. Why? “Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be cool, calm and collected in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

Question:
Do the agonies of death reduce a person’s sins? Does sickness reduce a person’s sins? Please advise us.

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

Yes, everything of sickness, difficulty, worry or distress that befalls a person, even the prick of a thorn, is an expiation for his sins. Then if he bears it patiently and seeks reward for that with Allaah, as well as the expiation of his sins he will be rewarded for the patience with which he bears the calamity that has befallen him. It makes no difference whether that is at the time of death or before. Calamities are expiation of sin for the believer. The proof of that is the verse (interpretation of the meaning):

“And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much”

[al-Shoora 42:30]

Since that is because of what our hands have earned, this indicates that it is an expiation for the things we have done. The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that no worry, distress or hurt befalls the Muslim, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allaah will expiate his sins thereby.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, in al-Fataawa al-Jaami’ah li’l-Mar’ah al-Muslimah, part 3, p. 1138

Look at how still this man is praying. Look at the bird on top of his head.
